In the same way that my handsome husband is a snob when it comes to me baking
artery clogging yummy desserts and breads, I am a snob about providing the cheapest possible meals for my family, but yet, they must be tasty! Nothing is worse than looking at my meal calendar at something that is not appetizing or appealing, because 9 times out of 10, I will say, "Never mind!" and tell handsome Hubbie to pick up pizza on the way home!
I have had a few friends rave about being able to feed their family for under $10 at home! I laugh at this! $10 at home is easy-peasy! Publix pitch ladies also tried to sell me on a "meal for under $10" at home which seemed like a fantastic find to them! HAHA! I told Hubbie! Why is that a hard thing to do?! My goodness, even $5 dollar meals at home are pretty easy around our house! I need someone to teach me how to do $2 meals for our family of 4! I can usually do 2 meals for our family of 4 for $5.
Not only do I enjoy saving money while feeding my family HEALTHY and good food, we also enjoy eating out! It makes running errands a little easier and also gives our dish washer a little break! I think even when we were pinching pennies and living off of NEXT TO NOTHING (when we first started paying off debt, I was working and Hubbie had just taken a HUGE pay cut in order to be working) we did still budget one time to eat out a month. Granted, it was Chick-Fil-A kids-eat-free night and we spent around $10, but still, it was a huge deal for our little family of 3. We rarely, if ever, eat at a "sit down, waitress" place. Not only because we have 3 small kids and having to wait and wait and wait is basically torturing with 3 kids, but also because you do have to pay tip! Several sit down places are offering "kids-eat-free", but it doesn't pay if you get drinks and pay tip....I would MUCH rather save that tip money or not eat out at all! So, finding restaurants that are quick, kid friendly and cheap are a plus! Also, finding restaurants that have "kids-eat-free" nights are a huge plus! We have a local restaurant- Great Wraps- that has been doing "kids-eat-free" all day, every day for about a year now! We found this wonderful deal last New Years Eve while we were out shopping and we ONLY go there now because of it! Before we couldn't get out of that place- it is not a sit down, waitress place- for less than $20. Now, with kids-eat-free, we can do it for around $16 (still kinda pricey for our standards, but good). The next place that we eat at once a week is Moe's. Moes also has kids-eat-free nights, but we have realized that because of the restrictions, its cheaper to eat there any night of the week if we get something Hubbie and I both love- their tacos! Yum! Cannot beat them or their price! Our family of 4 eats there and GETS VERY FULL for around $12 and some change! Not bad for a night that Momma doesn't have to cook or clean up! There were a couple of restaurants, during the summer, that had "family deals" and they were wonderful because we could feed our family twice on $20 and we could bring it home.... Wife Saver and Shane's Rib Shack..... they gave you SO much food and it was wonderful way to stretch money with a new baby! Of course, the cheapest place we can eat "out" is Little Ceasars, for $8 and some change to get a large pepperoni pizza...we can feed our family and we always have some leftover pizza!
So, there is my quick review on places that we can eat at cheaply! A few meals that we can make cheaply are....
Baked Spaghetti- 1 box of whole wheat noodles less than 30 cents; jar of spaghetti sauce- less than a dollar and cheese (a dollar or two MAYBE)... if I have pepperoni's leftover from pizza night- I sprinkle those on top! This yields a 9 x 13 pan and we are usually sick of this dish before its all gone.... Usually eat it 2 nights and at least one lunch.
Pancakes- Its super cheap, filling and easy! Publix has pancake mix boxes on sale all the time. Coupons are floating out there and you can get a box for less than a dollar. I make 11-13 pancakes at each meal time and we always have a few leftover so that someone can eat them for breakfast. Add some sausage/bacon and fruit.
Shepherds Pie- My husband CRINGES when I mention this meal! He
does did like it before we started to get all "gung-ho" on Dave Ramsey! I buy 3+ lbs of meat from Publix for around $8. I divide that into 3 storage bags. Each bag is a separate dish. So this consists of a 49 cent can of tomato soup, 1 lb of ground beef(2 bucks) and a bag of frozen veggies- maybe a dollar. I top it with mashed potatoes. I got several boxes for free when Publix had B1G1 free sale a month or so ago. This meal is also another one that we can eat for 2 dinners and then have enough for someone to eat it for lunch.
Mac and Cheese with Meat- This is another quick and easy meal. I usually buy Annie's boxed macaroni and cheese meals. You can find them at Target for less than a dollar. I cook it according to the package. Brown 1lb of ground beef and mix together. I always add some bread and a veggie to go with it. The kids gobble it up and we always have enough for another meal.
With chicken I usually make it into a chicken pot pie(I use my mom's recipe with no bottom crust- just a quick milk, eggs, flour topping) or dump it into the crockpot with potatoes and carrots and some chicken stock and let it cook. I sometimes dump chicken, a few onions and add bbq sauce and let it cook all day. I pull the chicken out at the end of the cooking time, shred it, add a tad bit more bbq sauce and you have chicken bbq sandwiches! Cheaper than pork!
Basically- if I can add meat/chicken into anything, I can make the meat stretch farther... I do not do many meals where the "meat" stand alone. Then I have to buy more meat or don't usually have leftovers! I do buy roasts and hams a few times a year. I can usually get 2 meals with the meat separate and add a few sides. Then I add the leftover meat into a soup or stew and can usually get another two meals off of that...
Another savings is baking your own bread. I know you can usually find loaves at Publix for around a dollar, BUT they usually ARE NOT made with natural products. Very rarely can I find a good coupon for bread and a sale for bread at the same time! Making bread is not hard... it can be time consuming. We invested $15 into a bread machine and my handsome husband has done a wonderful job keeping us stocked with homemade bread. Its just like a lot of things that are worth while- it takes planning ahead and time! Something I don't have a lot of and can't seem to do very well anymore!
9 times out of 10, making it home is going to be a lot cheaper and a whole lot healthier than using a box or eating out. When people rave about meal deals for $20 I think- what is so special about that?! :) For 2 people... its not cheap!
So, these are just a few of my things that I do to save money.... the less ingredients, the cheaper the meal- the more money I save!
