One day while surfing the internet, I came across Cultures for Health. After watching their videos, I was convinced that making yogurt and kefir was super easy and that we could do it too!
We buy 2-3 cartons of Stoneyfield yogurt a week and if Hubbie wants yogurt that week, he likes Greek Yogurt, and I usually buy 1 or 2. Thats a lot of money and Millie isn't even eating it yet! In a few short months, we'll have another yogurt eater. Eeek! Anyway, I had talked with a gal that tried yogurt in the crockpot/ on the countertop and it was a flop, so I was a little bit scared to try it. But I figured buying some cultures was worth the investment, if it worked, so I purchased some cultures, received my package just a few days later and I set to work!
Because I was trying to make yogurt and kefir during the coldest temperatures GA has seen since LAST Jan/Feb, it probably wasn't the BEST time to try to make this stuff on the countertop, but I gave it a try.
To make a long story short, I messed up on the yogurt. I wasn't sure what to look for and I kept referring back to the instructions. One evening, I checked it and decided it probably needed another evening to set out.... well, the next morning, we had red, furry yogurt! Uck!
The kefir, on the other hand, worked! We have been drinking homemade kefir this week and its been delightful! I have made strawberry and banana and raspberry {with a little elderberry mix in}. Both have been very tasty! Its so nice to have another food option in the house for the kids to have that is tasty and healthy!
When making yogurt, the company suggests splitting the cultures so that if you ruin your first batch, you can try to make it again. I haven't felt brave enough to try it again, but I need to....

I do a 24 hour ferment with the yogurt b/c that eliminates the lactose (I also use a Cultures for Health starter). I found that if I put it in the oven with the light on, it keeps it at just the right temperature. I leave an oven thermometer to be sure. Once I had to stick a pen in the door to keep it slightly ajar, but it works great! I am not able to eat yogurt right now, but I can't wait to make a new batch when I am able to reintroduce it! Drop some berries in, and YUM!
